Where states publish carrier-level rates

Most states don't publish what individual carriers charge. These 11 do, through their insurance departments. The spread between cheapest and priciest published carrier is the argument for comparing, in one number:

  • Alabama: Safeco Insurance Company of Illinois ($759/yr) to Nationwide Mutual Fire Insurance Company ($1,536/yr), a $777 gap for the same sample driver (Alabama Department of Insurance - Automobile Premium Comparisons tool)
  • Arizona: Farmers Insurance Exchange ($1,006/yr) to Safeco Insurance Company of America ($2,193/yr), a $1,187 gap for the same sample driver (Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions (DIFI) - 2023 Premium Comparison and Complaint Ratios for Automobile Insurance)
  • District of Columbia: USAA Casualty Insurance Company ($279/yr) to Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance Company ($1,099/yr), a $820 gap for the same sample driver (DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB), 2024 Automobile Insurance Premium Comparison, Sample Profiles (Standard Auto))
  • Hawaii: Allstate Insurance Company ($258/yr) to State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. ($783/yr), a $525 gap for the same sample driver (State of Hawaii Insurance Division (DCCA), 2026 Motor Vehicle Insurance Premium Comparison (Sample Annual Motor Vehicle Insurance Premiums))
  • Maryland: Progressive Select Insurance Co. ($2,450/yr) to Allstate Indemnity Co. ($5,099/yr), a $2,649 gap for the same sample driver (Maryland Insurance Administration, Auto Insurance: A Comparison Guide to Rates)

What moves your number

State averages bundle every kind of driver into one figure: new and experienced, clean records and claims, old sedans and new trucks. Your own rate keys on your driving record, age, credit history (where allowed), your car, and the coverage levels you choose. Which is the honest catch with every table like this one: averages are other people's numbers. The only rate that's actually yours comes from quoting your real profile, and that takes about two minutes.
